Emergency Response: Handling Power Outages Mid-Sintering
There is no sound more heart-sinking in a dental lab than the sudden, eerie silence of a power outage during a high-temperature sintering cycle. You are left wondering: Did I just lose 20 units of work? Is the furnace damaged? Can I simply hit "Resume"?
Step 1: Don't Touch the Door
The most critical rule is patience. If the power cuts out at 1,400°C, the furnace is a massive heat sink. Opening the door immediately will cause a sudden, massive thermal shock to both the heating elements and your zirconia restorations. Let the furnace cool down naturally to at least 200°C before even considering opening the chamber.
Step 2: Assess the "Crash" Point
Once cool, check your controller logs. If the power failed during the "Ramp" (Heating) phase, your zirconia is likely compromised and should be discarded. If it failed during the "Soak" (Holding) phase, it may have reached partial densification.
Walla’s Emergency Rule:
When in doubt, perform a "Quality Test." If you suspect the units were compromised, take one crown and inspect it under a loupe for signs of micro-cracking. Never risk a patient’s health on a "maybe."
