Pro-Storage Secrets: Keeping Your Spare MoSi2 Elements Like New

Spare heating elements shouldn't degrade while waiting for their turn. MoSi2 is a specialized ceramic-metallic compound that is highly sensitive to its environment. If stored incorrectly, your "fresh" spare might be structurally compromised before it ever touches a furnace.

Why Storage Matters: The "Creep" Factor

MoSi2 elements are susceptible to creep—a slow, permanent deformation caused by gravity. If an element is left leaning against a wall or resting on an uneven surface for months, the ceramic matrix can undergo microscopic shifting. When installed, this "hidden" warp creates stress that causes the rod to snap during the first thermal expansion cycle.

Walla’s Storage Protocol

  • Horizontal Support: Always store elements flat on a level, padded surface. If you must store them vertically, ensure they are suspended, not resting on the tip.
  • Humidity Control: Moisture is the enemy. Store spares in a climate-controlled room. If your lab is humid, keep elements in a sealed container with at least 500g of industrial-grade desiccant.
  • The 200°C Pre-Conditioning: For any spare stored longer than 6 months, perform a "dry-out" cycle: place the element in a gentle oven (not the furnace) at 200°C for 2 hours before installation to drive out deep-seated moisture.

Maximize your investment.

Ensure your spares are ready for the long run with Walla’s storage standards.
