So, you’ve identified the "dusting" and confirmed that your elements are contaminated. The natural instinct? Grab a wire brush and scrub them clean. Stop right there. That is the fastest way to ruin a set of MoSi2 elements.
Why You Should Never Use Physical Force
MoSi2 rods are essentially a specialized ceramic-metallic compound. While they are extremely heat-resistant, they are also incredibly brittle. Scrubbing them with abrasive tools or wire brushes creates micro-scratches on the protective $SiO_2$ layer. These scratches are "open wounds" that expose the inner core to oxygen, leading to rapid, uneven oxidation and premature failure.
The Walla-Approved Cleaning Protocol
- The Gentle Vacuum: Use a HEPA-filtered vacuum with a soft nozzle attachment to remove loose dust or debris from the hearth and the rods. Be extremely gentle—do not bang the nozzle against the elements.
- The "Controlled Burn-Out": Instead of physical scrubbing, use the furnace’s own thermal power. Run an empty, high-temperature cycle (usually 100°C–150°C higher than your max sintering temperature, for 30–60 minutes). This heat forces impurities to volatilize and helps the $SiO_2$ layer re-bond.
- The Chemical Check: If the contamination is due to spillover from a glaze, ensure it hasn't seeped into the refractory brick. If the brick itself is contaminated, it will continue to off-gas and re-contaminate your elements. In that case, replacing the floor plate is your only real solution.
Final Warning: If you've tried the "Controlled Burn-Out" and the elements are still showing signs of heavy pitting, don't waste time—replace them before they short-circuit and damage your furnace controller.
