The "Green Coating": Why Your Heating Elements Change Color

If you notice your MoSi2 rods have developed a dull, greenish or grayish-white coating, don't panic. In most cases, this "greenish" appearance is exactly what you want to see—it’s your element's "SiO2 Shield."

Why It Matters

At temperatures above 1,000°C, the silicon in the rod reacts with oxygen to form a protective layer of Silicon Dioxide ($SiO_2$). This glass-like seal prevents deep oxidation and allows the element to "self-heal."

A Sign of Health:

A uniform, matte-green or gray coating means your furnace environment is balanced. Don't scrub it away! That layer is the only thing keeping your MoSi2 elements from turning into powder.

When to be Concerned:

  • Peeling or Bubbling: Indicates chemical attack from binder vapors.
  • Uneven/Patchy: Suggests irregular temperature zones (hot spots).
  • Deep Black: Indicates carbon contamination, which is highly destructive.
