Installation Best Practices: How to Handle Brittle MoSi2 Elements

Replacing heating elements is like surgery. MoSi2 is exceptionally brittle at room temperature—treat it like glass, not metal. Proper installation is the difference between a year of service and a failure on day one.

The "Floating" Principle

Your furnace reaches 1,500°C; your rods will expand. If you clamp them too tightly, that expansion force has nowhere to go but into the rod itself, causing it to snap. Use clamps that allow for slight "float" and natural movement.

Installation Checklist:

  • Clean the Ports: Remove all debris from the pass-through holes to prevent scratches.
  • Align First: Never use screws to "force" the element into place.
  • The Compliance Check: After installation, the element should feel slightly compliant, not rigidly fixed.
