CEREC Milling Units and Burs: Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: When should I use the Extra Fine (EF) grinding option?
A1: The EF grinding option is available in CEREC 4.4x and higher, and inLab 15 and higher. However, Sirona estimates that 95% of cases don't require the EF option. Use it only for restorations with very complex geometries, as production time will be significantly longer when using EF grinding.
Q2: What's the average lifespan of CEREC burs?
A2: For 20mm burs: Lifespan can vary greatly depending on materials used, block length, and the number of restorations stacked in a block. Most users can expect 15-20 mills per bur.
For carbide burs (Shaper 25, Shaper 25 RZ, and Finisher 10): an average life of 50 units per bur.
Q3: I'm getting a "Measurements Incorrect for Right/Left Instrument" error. What should I do?
A3: This error is usually caused by issues with block or bur placement or selection.
If the error mentions the Right Instrument, it's often due to a block that's the wrong size or slightly out of position.
If the error mentions the Left Instrument, it's typically due to incorrect bur selection.
Q4: What should I do if a bur is stuck in the motor?
A4: Follow these steps:
Try using the bur tool on the opposite side instrument. If it doesn't work on any burs, the tool might be stripped and need replacement.
Check if the plunger pins on the chamber walls are functioning properly. They should spring when pressed.
If both the bur tool and plunger pins are working, but the bur is still stuck, the spindle motor likely needs replacement. Contact technical support.
Q5: How do I change the burs in the MC X and MC XL milling units?
A5:Click "Change Instruments" in the software.
Select which Bur Set to change (for four motor units).
Use the silver bur wrench to remove old burs and insert new ones.
Tighten until you hear a click.
In the software, click the image to select the new burs (changing "Inserted" to "Replaced").
Click OK and then Exit Configuration.
Q6: How often should I replace the thrust ball screw when manually clamping ceramic blocks?
A6: Replace the thrust ball screw after every 500 clamping operations due to wear from high clamping forces.
Q7: What precautions should I take when fixing ceramic blocks?
A7:Use a torque wrench with the block clamp to tighten the block until you hear a click.
Always check if the block is correctly fixed to avoid errors and block splintering.
Q8: Are there any concerns with the cooling water?
A8: Yes, high ceramic or non-precious metal (NEM) content in the cooling water can damage pumps and drives. Ensure proper maintenance and filtration of the cooling system.
